Mr. Gerald Symonds

Mr. Gerald Rendall Symonds, age 90 years, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 21, 2014 at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre with his family by his side. Gerald was born on January 28, 1924 and raised in Keewatin, Ontario. He served with the Royal Canadian Navy and was a dedicated veteran. When honourably discharged he made his home in Thunder Bay working for the Canadian Grain Commission, retiring as an inspector. He met and married the love of his life Alice Burkowski on August 11, 1947. Gerald was a long time member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #5 and the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping. Spending time with his family and friends, especially in his backyard, was his greatest pleasure. Gerald will be sadly missed by his children: Darlene (Michael) Harrison and Gerald (Lori Ksonzyna); grandchildren: Shawn (Cheryl) Harrison, Tyler (Lorna) Harrison, Allison (Michael) Hammond, Valerie (Marc) Savard, Kaitlin Symonds and Tanner Symonds; great grandchildren: Mitchell Harrison, Shaelyn Harrison, Carly Ross-Harrison, Anna Hammond and Elle Savard; twin brothers: Roy (Dorothy) and Ralph (Fern); son-in-law: Gary Lindley; special family friends: The Wiseman Family. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. He will now be reunited with his wife of 51 years, Alice who predeceased him on July 11, 1998. he was also predeceased by his daughter Mildred Lindley, sister Mildred Eaid, niece Geraldine Pfaff; nephew Wayne Symonds and his parents Maitland and Gladys Symonds. Funeral Services for the late Mr. Gerald Symonds will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James with Rev. Susan Mattinson officiating. A private interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Arthritis Society, the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society or to a charity of your choice.
